Tabletop Tuesday: painting Seamus, the Mad Hatter [Malifaux]

Mairie tripped again, the hem of her dress causing her to stumble to the wet cobblestones as she ran. Desperation gave her strength and she pushed herself to her feet, fleeing down the alley. Bare feet slipped on the wet stone, her high heels kicked off long ago. She could hear her pursuer behind her, and rounded a corner she knew would take her back to the main street –

Abruptly she skidded to a halt, her way blocked by a hay cart obstructing the alley. A pot-bellied man leered at her from the drivers seat, and with a shiver of fear she realised too late she’d been herded into a trap. Her pursuer entered the alley behind her, a gap-toothed smile plastered on his acne-scarred face. He slowed to a walk, panting with exertion as he stalked towards her.

‘Just ‘and over the scrip, whore, and there’ll be no nasty business’ he crowed. Mairie reached into the folds of her dress, but instead of her purse a sharp blade appeared in her hand, slashing across the scarred man’s face. He reeled backwards, blood spilling onto the cobblestones, and glowered at her. His companion grabbed Mairie before she could react, twisting her arm painfully and forcing her to drop the stiletto knife.

‘That’ll cost you’ he muttered, stalking towards her. But before he could reach her, an explosion shook the night and his head abruptly disappeared in a cloud of blood and bone. His companion let go of Mairie as he drew a revolver, but another cannon crash sounded and he collapsed screaming, his left leg gone from the knee down. A final boom of thunder sounded, and he fell dead on the street.

Struggling to stand, Mairie desperately peered into the mist, trying to see where the shots had come from. A figure slowly appeared, walking through the fog, and her spirits lifted as she saw a glint of metal – a marshal’s badge!

As the figure strode out into the open, her heart sank as she realised what she had perceived to be a lawman’s star was, in fact, a gold pocket watch swinging loosely from its chain. Her saviour, if he could be called that now she recognized his face, was immaculately dressed in a brown suit, a dark blue cravat at his throat and a ridiculously sized top hat perched atop a mess of raven black hair. A smoking pistol hung casually from one hand, and the cold glint of a switchblade shone in the other.

‘I’m so sorry, dearie’ Seamus smirked without a trace of sympathy, ‘but I’m afraid your night’s about to take a rather unpleasant turn.’

After last Tuesday’s introduction, this week’s Tabletop Tuesday will take a look at how I painted my Seamus, as well as his little friend the Copycat Killer since they’re pretty much wearing the same outfit.



Seamus medley

I was inspired by the new M2E artwork for Seamus, which depicts him in a much more muted attire than his previous iterations. I, for one, really like this – it suits the menacing image of him as a serial killer far better, and I can almost see him blending into the crowds on Malifaux’s street in this getup (if it weren’t for his face on all the wanted posters, that is). I will be painting my second plastic Seamus in my classic blue coat scheme at some point, but for now let’s look at the Mad Hatter in his more sombre outfit.

The coat is one of the main focal points of the model, and since I knew I wanted to keep the hat quite dark it had to have a bit of colour to it. I used P3’s Battlefield Brown for the most part, with little highlights before being washed in Nuln Oil to add some depth and darkness to the colour. The shirt, on the other hand, was painted in Codex Grey and then worked up through highlights to Fortress Grey before being given a Nuln black wash as well. The hat was painted in a matt black, and given a Midnight Blue band – this was also used on his cravat / bow / neckwear to tie him in to the main thematic colour of the crew.

I tried a new technique for the skin, using P3’s Tanned Flesh as a base with Barbarian Flesh highlights before finishing with a Vallejo Fleshtone Shade wash. I deliberately wanted to keep Seamus’s skin tone darker than the Belles (more on that in their post next week!), and the flesh wash helps to bring out his features and that fantastic smirk.

Finally, his various accoutrements such as the pocket-watch, buttons and buckles were done in my old favourite Dwarf Bronze – I’ll be quite heartbroken when my pot runs out! I used Boltgun Metal for his .50 flintlock, with some Mithril Silver highlighting on the blade to make it stand out a bit more. I wanted to try out a new basing scheme, and so simply flocked the bases with medium-to-fine sand before painting it black, then drybrushing in Codex Grey followed by Fortress Grey. It works well as a less in-your-face basing method than before, and still reflects the dark streets of Malifaux that Seamus inevitably haunts!

His little friend was done in the same colours and styles, since I always think that he looks best in matching clothing – after all, he’s had his Mistaken Identity spell in both editions of Malifaux! He was great fun to paint, if a little worrying due to how an overly vigorous drybrush can cause him to wobble on those scissors. He’s still a great little model, though, and looks more appropriate than ever with his tower of hats and over-sized scissors.
